Deola stated in an interview posted on Biola Adebayo Ent’s YouTube channel that she was tricked into going to Mali under the impression that she would be working in a pharmacy, only to discover that she had been sold to a woman who insisted on her working for no pay. Deola described in the interview how the woman to whom she was turned over made it apparent that she was now her “property” and that in order to be freed, she would need to pay one million naira. She claimed that the woman even turned down her desire to go back to Nigeria and threatened to kill her if she didn’t cooperate.
According to Deola, “the woman informed me that I had been bought and that I would not receive payment for any labour I performed.” “She warned me that I would not be allowed to return home until I paid her a million naira. She threatened to kill me if I didn’t comply. Additionally, she remembered a man telling her that if she didn’t comply with the woman, she might be poisoned.
