In an official statement released to the public, the police named the suspects as Abiola Paul Olusoji, Azeez Olasunkanmi Fowosere, Dairo Temitope Timothy, Osilaja Adeniyi, Adewale Olajide Abe, Samuel Chukwuka Ateweh, and Adeosun Adekunle Solomon.
According to the statement, the men were reportedly caught in the act by members of a local community but managed to flee before they could be apprehended by law enforcement officers.
“We have carried out a thorough investigation into this criminal act and found the claims to be credible. Regrettably, the suspects escaped during attempts to arrest them,” the statement said.
The police called on members of the public to assist in locating the individuals, urging anyone with relevant information to report to the nearest police station.
“Various attempts to arrest and prosecute them have so far proven unsuccessful. We appeal to the public to cooperate with us in ensuring these individuals are brought to justice,” the statement added.
Under Nigeria’s Same-Sex Marriage (Prohibition) Act 2014, same-sex relationships and related acts are criminalised. The law continues to attract criticism from international human rights organisations who describe it as discriminatory and in violation of individual rights to privacy and expression.
