After a wild contest in which the League Two team had seized the lead through Tyrell Warren and Charles Vernam, the game ended 12-11 in favour of Grimsby on penalties. Grimsby was denied two more goals, but Mbeumo and Harry Maguire gave United a temporary reprieve before the comeback failed in the penalty shootout.

In the middle of the crowd, Mbeumo looked obviously upset and insecure as Grimsby supporters poured onto the pitch in joy. In a quick response, Fernandes moved to securely accompany his teammate off the pitch, with security guards on either side to protect him from the rushing fans. As a large portion of the United team had already retreated down the tunnel, Fernandes’ decisive action was captured on camera and shared on social media, demonstrating his leadership. After the loss, United manager Ruben Amorim publicly admitted the team’s poor performance, highlighting the lack of focus and effort in the squad. He expressed dissatisfaction with the players and their general mindset by acknowledging that his team “was not even here” at the beginning of the game.

Fernandes received a lot of recognition for his acts in spite of the humiliating defeat since they showed his leadership and dedication to his players in the face of tremendous pressure.
