The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in Nigeria has arrested a woman attempting to board a flight to India after discovering 2.2 kilograms of cocaine in her possession. The suspect, identified during a routine screening at Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos, claimed she was traveling for fibroid surgery. The interception, announced by the NDLEA on Saturday, underscores the agency’s intensified efforts to curb drug trafficking through Nigeria’s borders.

According to NDLEA spokesperson Femi Babafemi, the woman was detained at the airport’s departure lounge following a body scan that revealed anomalies. A subsequent search uncovered multiple packages of cocaine concealed within her luggage, carefully wrapped to evade detection. Preliminary investigations suggest the suspect intended to deliver the drugs to a recipient in India, where the street value of the seized cocaine is estimated to be worth millions of naira. The NDLEA has not disclosed the suspect’s identity, citing ongoing investigations to dismantle the trafficking network behind the operation.

The agency’s operatives described the suspect’s cover story of seeking medical treatment as a common tactic used by traffickers to deflect suspicion. “Claiming medical travel is a frequent ploy, but our advanced screening technology and vigilance exposed the deception,” Babafemi stated. The NDLEA has intensified its use of body scanners and intelligence-driven operations to intercept drugs at Nigeria’s airports, following a surge in trafficking attempts through international routes.

This arrest adds to a string of recent NDLEA successes, including the seizure of over 5 tons of illicit drugs across the country in 2025. Nigeria remains a key transit hub for narcotics, with cartels exploiting its busy airports and porous borders. The agency has vowed to pursue all leads to identify and apprehend accomplices in this case, emphasizing its zero-tolerance policy for drug trafficking.

Public reactions on platforms like X reflect mixed sentiments, with some praising the NDLEA’s vigilance and others expressing concern over the persistence of drug smuggling. The suspect is in custody, facing charges under Nigeria’s anti-narcotics laws, which carry severe penalties, including lengthy prison terms. As investigations continue, the NDLEA has urged travelers to comply with regulations to avoid unwittingly aiding criminal networks.CONTINUE FULL READING>>>>>
