The LGBTQ+ community in Botswana is reeling at the tragic news that Kenosi Mokobamotho, a beloved model, MC, and choreographer, has been murdered in what’s believed to be a homophobic hate crime.

According to Lesbians, Gays, and Bisexuals of Botswana (LEGABIBO), reports indicate that Mokobamotho was assaulted, beaten, burned, and abandoned on the roadside over the weekend in the town of Maun.

He was hospitalised but ultimately succumbed to his severe injuries on Tuesday. Unverified social media reports suggest that Mokobamotho was attacked by a group of men.

A Down-to-Earth Person

LEGABIBO expressed its devastation, outrage, and alarm over the horrific incident.

In a statement, the organisation said, “We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and community as they grapple with this devastating and senseless loss. No family should ever have to endure such pain, especially at the hands of hate-driven violence.”

Friends, family members, and acquaintances took to social media to express their shock and sorrow over the senseless murder of such a dynamic individual.

Okavango News 24/7 described him as “a down-to-earth person who loved nothing more than working hard and having fun whenever time permitted.”

Calls for Justice and Legal Reform

LEGABIBO condemned the heinous attack and urged the Botswana Police Service and all law enforcement agencies to conduct a thorough investigation and ensure the swift apprehension of the perpetrators.

The organisation further called for the enactment of hate crimes legislation to explicitly address and punish violence and discrimination motivated by homophobia, transphobia, or any other form of prejudice.

LEGABIBO emphasised that education, awareness, and community engagement are vital in preventing further acts of hate. They stressed the importance of fostering a society rooted in respect and inclusion.

“Violence against anyone because of who they are, who they love, or how they express their identity has no place in our communities,” said the organisation. “The people of Botswana deserve a nation where every individual can live free from fear, hatred, or violence.”

Homosexuality was decriminalised in Botswana in 2019 and was confirmed as legal by the Court of Appeal in 2021. Botswana’s president, Duma Boko, a former human rights lawyer, is known for his support of LGBTQ+ rights……CONTINUE FULL READING>>>>>
