According to Peace, her husband made arrangements for someone to give her a bag to take with her, she claimed in an interview with the human rights program Brekete Family. She claimed that she thought the package was secure because when she opened it, she noticed hairpieces—the type used to create braids.

But according to Peace, when she got to the Malaysian airport, officials looked through her bag and found hard drugs concealed therein. She claimed that after being captured right away, she received a death sentence. According to her, the punishment was ultimately lowered to life in prison. According to Peace, she was incarcerated for 12 years before being declared innocent and eventually freed.
