The Federal Government has reaffirmed its position on the prohibition of imported poultry products. During a press conference in Abuja on Friday, the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security stressed that the long-standing ban on the import of chicken is still in effect. He pointed out that even with the restriction, Nigerian marketplaces are still overrun with illegally imported frozen poultry goods, particularly during the holidays.

Nigeria continues to prohibit the importation of chicken. To be clear, the Minister said, “It is illegal for any frozen chicken or turkey to be sold in markets today.” He clarified that the majority of poultry items that are illegally imported into the nation are stored with hazardous chemicals, such as formalin, which is bad for human health. The Minister emphasised that protecting public health is just as important as protecting the economy in the government’s decision. He asserts that there are significant health dangers associated with consuming these illegal goods, ranging from food poisoning to chronic health issues.

Additionally, he asked Nigerians to support their local farmers by purchasing domestic poultry products, stating that, with sufficient assistance, the domestic poultry industry can meet the country’s need. “Across the nation, there are millions of dedicated chicken farmers. Nigerians who support them are not only safeguarding their health but also advancing our economy and generating employment, he said. The Minister also said that in order to bolster border patrols and crack down on smugglers, the government is collaborating closely with the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) and other security organisations. In order to help local farmers obtain more inexpensive feed, vaccines, and improved infrastructure to boost output, he noted, new rules are being implemented.

Even with the restriction, frozen poultry products are still widely available in Nigerian marketplaces and are priced lower than those made locally. Due to financial constraints brought on by the growing cost of living, many households choose the less expensive option, which increases demand for illegal goods. However, the Minister urged people to put their health before immediate financial gain. He gave Nigerians the assurance that the cost of domestically produced poultry would level down in the upcoming months due to continuous improvements in the agricultural sector.
