We’re not acting for selfish reasons – Lamido defends talks with leaders across parties

Former Jigawa State governor and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) elder statesman, Sule Lamido, has defended ongoing talks among Nigeria’s political leaders, saying the discussions are meant to protect democracy and secure a better future for the country not for personal gain.

In an interview with the BBC, Lamido said PDP leaders are reaching out to influential politicians across different parties to build unity and stability.

“We’re not acting for selfish reasons,” Lamido said.

“Our aim is to safeguard democracy and ensure Nigeria achieves lasting progress so that life becomes easier for everyone.”

The former governor explained that he has been meeting with both PDP colleagues and politicians from other parties, including Atiku Abubakar and President Bola Tinubu, because dialogue is vital for the nation’s growth.

“Even if we no longer belong to the same party, we are all Nigerians and share the same hope for this country,” Lamido said.

“Talking with anyone to move Nigeria forward is not a crime.”

He noted that his recent courtesy meeting with President Tinubu was based on their long-standing relationship dating back to the days of the Social Democratic Party (SDP).

“If the president does well, we will commend him, If he makes mistakes, we must tell him the truth so things can be corrected. This is not criticism for its own sake it’s about making things better.”
