Togolese driver arrested for reckless driving in Lagos

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, LASTMA, has confirmed the arrest of a Togolese driver who caused a high-speed accident that left a pedestrian critically injured at the Adeniji Adele intersection, inward Ilubirin on Lagos Island.

In a statement on Monday, Adebayo Taofiq, Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment at LASTMA, said the crash occurred when the driver of a Mazda car with registration number EPE 749 GS was reportedly travelling at an unlawful speed.

The motorist lost control of the vehicle and rammed into a pedestrian attempting to cross the road, leaving the victim with severe injuries and heavy bleeding.

Eyewitnesses said the driver tried to escape after the collision but was quickly intercepted and arrested by LASTMA officers. He was later handed over to the Adeniji Adele Police Division for investigation and possible prosecution.

Emergency responders from the Lagos State Ambulance Service, LASAMBUS, were immediately notified and transported the injured pedestrian to the General Hospital, Odan, Lagos Island, where the victim is receiving urgent medical care.

LASTMA General Manager, Mr Olalekan Bakare-Oki, condemned the reckless conduct that led to the crash, describing speeding as one of the most dangerous causes of avoidable road accidents in the state.

“Motorists must exercise restraint and comply strictly with traffic regulations to safeguard lives and property,” Bakare-Oki said.
