JUST IN: Federal Fire Service begins nationwide audit of buildings for fire safety compliance

The Federal Fire Service (FFS) has commenced a nationwide audit of public and private buildings to ensure strict compliance with fire safety regulations and readiness for emergencies.

The exercise, which began on Wednesday in Abuja, is being carried out by the Task Force on Public and Private Building Audit, inaugurated by Controller General Olumode Samuel Adeyemi on October 14, 2025.

The move follows the recent Afri Tower fire incident and forms part of the agency’s efforts to strengthen enforcement mechanisms and reduce the risk of future fire outbreaks.

Adeyemi said the audit underscores the Service’s commitment to prevention, preparedness, and compliance under the National Fire Safety Code.

He added that “safety consciousness and adherence to regulations remain the most effective ways to protect lives and property across the country.”

The audit will be extended to all FFS state commands to ensure that every structure meets the required safety standards.

The FFS urged property owners, managers, and occupants to cooperate fully with the Task Force to ensure an efficient and transparent process.

Adeyemi emphasised that fire safety is a shared responsibility, noting that the assessment aims not to punish but to promote a safer environment for all.
