Nigeria not divided by religion, says ex-minister Fani-Kayode

Former minister of aviation, Femi Fani-Kayode, says Nigeria is not a country divided by religion but one where a few political actors exploit faith for selfish gain.

Fani-Kayode spoke at the 2025 Synod of the Anglican Diocese of Kafanchan, themed “Great Is Your Faithfulness.”

The event brought together clergy, government officials, and members of the congregation for spiritual reflection and an assessment of Nigeria’s national progress.

Delivering his address as guest speaker, Fani-Kayode said that despite insecurity, political tension, and economic challenges, Nigeria continues to endure through divine guidance, even when global partners appear reluctant to offer help.

He commended Kaduna State governor Uba Sani for promoting peaceful coexistence among residents, noting that Nigerians are capable of living harmoniously regardless of ethnic or religious differences.

Fani-Kayode said any perceived religious division in the country is artificial and driven by individuals who benefit from disorder and mistrust.

FFK recalled that Kaduna State once faced severe religious tension, adding that Christians were marginalised and victims of violence, especially during the 2016 Christmas Day attacks in parts of Southern Kaduna.

He said about 800 people were killed in four local government areas on that day, describing the incident as a “gruesome massacre” that left lasting scars on the Christian community.

According to him, hospitals were shut and victims were neglected, while communities were repeatedly attacked without response from the authorities at the time.

Fani-Kayode said such experiences strengthened Christians to resist oppression peacefully and to continue trusting in God.

“To be a Christian is not to be a second-class citizen or a slave. It is to be a child of the living God,” he said.

The Synod concluded with a collective call on Nigerians to reject divisive narratives and embrace a shared national identity anchored on unity and faith.
