The Taraba State Governor, Agbu Kefas, has finalised high-level consultations and discreet political engagements ahead of his planned defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
The governor recently met with APC youth stakeholders in the Federal Capital Territory, where he reportedly confirmed his intention to join the ruling party once ongoing arrangements are concluded.
The meeting, which took place on Wednesday at T.Y. Danjuma House in Asokoro, was coordinated by Comrade Abubakar Gembu and attended by APC youth representatives from all 16 local government areas of Taraba State.
At the meeting, Governor Kefas reportedly stated that Taraba could no longer remain politically isolated and must align with the national power structure to attract development, security, and greater federal presence.
The APC youth stakeholders praised the governor’s move, describing it as courageous and in the best interest of the state. They expressed confidence that the planned defection would reposition Taraba for accelerated growth.
In the same vein, APC State Chairman, Barrister Ibrahim El-Sudi, welcomed the development and described it as a significant boost for the party. He emphasised that the APC remains open to new members, saying, “It would be suicidal for the party to shut its doors to those willing to join.”
Reliable sources also revealed that Governor Kefas has received the approval of his political mentor, General T.Y. Danjuma (rtd), and has held discussions with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to finalise the move.
“It is no longer hidden that the governor is joining the APC. It is now a matter of days or weeks,” a PDP member in Taraba confirmed, noting that consultations with PDP leaders have already been concluded.
Political observers say the defection is likely to reposition power structures ahead of the 2027 elections, with many politicians in the state already lobbying for new alignments.
One PDP member, Lawal Rabiu, noted that while the APC’s current structure may be affected, negotiations and compromises would ensure no group feels sidelined.
Similarly, the governor’s Special Adviser on Political Matters and Special Duties, Josiah Kente, described the planned defection as “a pragmatic and strategic decision” aimed at strengthening Taraba’s development agenda and enhancing cooperation with the Federal Government.
He commended Governor Kefas for undertaking broad consultations before taking the step, saying the process reflects maturity and inclusive leadership.
